Your account and signing in
Your Bitment account is one identity that can hold several verified email addresses, belong to more than one firm, and move between different parts of the product, your firm's operators workspace, a client portal, a referrer portal, all without a separate login for each. This page covers how you get an account, how you sign in, and where to manage it.
Getting an account
Bitment accounts aren't created through a public sign-up page. Your account is set up for you, either by the Bitment team when your firm is onboarded, or by a teammate who invites you into your firm (from Settings › Firm; see Firm and team). An invitation email links you to a page that gets you into the inviting firm once you finish signing in.
If you're a client rather than an operator, your firm sends you access to the client portal directly; there's nothing to sign up for on your end. Some firms also offer self-serve bookkeeping sign-up directly at their books.bitment.co address; see Self-serve bookkeeping.
Where to find it
Your account is reachable two ways, and both show the same information:
- Settings › Account in the dock (the gear tile at the tail).
- The account dashboard behind your avatar, in the top menu bar (desktop) or the account row in the phone's quick actions sheet.
Key concepts
- Individual: your one Bitment account. It can hold several verified email addresses, and any of them signs you into the same account.
- Verified email: an email address you've proven you own, which can be used to sign in.
- Sign-in method: how you get into your account: a secure emailed link, a password, or Google sign-in.
- Two-factor authentication (2FA): coming soon. A second proof of identity, in addition to your password, from an authenticator app or a text-message code.
- Portal: the surface your account can land in: the operators workspace, the client portal, or the referrer portal. See Firms, scopes, and clients.
- Enter your email address on the sign-in screen, or choose Continue with Google.
- If you typed an email, Bitment always lets you choose how to continue:
- Email me a secure sign-in link: sends a one-click link to your inbox. Click it to sign in; nothing to type.
- Password: if you've set a password, enter it.
- If you haven't set a password yet, you're offered Set up a password instead, which emails you a link into a short setup wizard.
- An unrecognized email that hasn't been invited or provisioned will tell you no account exists.
Set up a password
- From the sign-in method chooser, choose Set up a password (or follow the "set up a password" link from your email).
- Choose a password.
- You're signed in immediately, no separate confirmation screen.
Two-factor authentication (coming soon)
Two-factor authentication is coming soon. When it ships, you will enroll an authenticator app or text-message codes from the Security section of your account, and every password sign-in will then require a code as well as your password. Until then, the secure email link is the recommended sign-in method, since it proves access to your inbox on every sign-in.
Manage your linked emails
Your account can hold more than one verified email address, and any of them can sign you in.
- Open the account dashboard (your avatar, or Settings › Account).
- Under your linked emails, click add an email, enter the new address, and confirm the code sent to it.
- Set any linked email as your primary address, the one that shows up in your account greeting and outbound mail. Set-primary and removing an email are both available from the same list.
- You can also link an additional Google account from the same section, using Continue with Google, if you want to sign in with more than one.
An email can't be removed if it's your primary address or your last remaining one; set a different primary first.
The account dashboard
Behind your avatar (or at Settings › Account) is a single page with a few named sections:
- Profile: your name and phone number.
- Linked emails: the addresses that can sign you in.
- Security: sign-in methods and password management (two-factor authentication coming soon).
- Context: a launcher into your standing AI context, personal instructions the AI reads on every conversation. See Context and memory.
- Diagnostics: an opt-in switch to share your account for troubleshooting, so the Bitment team can investigate an issue you're having. Off by default; turn it on only while you want help, and back off once it's resolved.
- Apps: download the desktop app or install the mobile app. See Desktop and mobile apps.
- Browser: external-link handling preferences (desktop app only, plus a cross-platform "ask before opening an external link" switch).
- Firms: the firms you operate in, each with a workspace color, a link to manage its members, and options to leave the firm or (if you're the owner) delete it. A Create firm link starts a new one.
Switching between portals
If your account has access to more than one part of the product, an in-workspace switcher lets you move between them without signing out:
- The Operators Portal is always available to anyone with operator access, and reflects every firm you operate in at once; there's no separate switch per firm.
- The Client Portal appears if you're a client of at least one firm.
- The Referrer Portal appears if you refer clients to a firm.
Reach the switcher from your avatar (desktop) or the account row in the phone's quick actions sheet. Switching re-scopes your session and takes you straight into the matching surface.
Your workspace theme color
Each firm you operate in can carry its own theme color, picked from your Firms section on the account dashboard. It's a personal choice, not something your teammates set for you, and it re-tints the whole workspace while you're scoped to that firm. This is distinct from the per-window color pickers described in Taking the workspace tour, which color one window rather than the whole app.
Sign out
Use the account row behind your avatar (desktop) or in the phone's quick actions sheet, and choose Sign out.
Tips
- If you use more than one verified email to communicate with clients, make sure the one you want visible in your outbound mail is set as primary.
- The Diagnostics switch is specifically for letting the Bitment team investigate an issue on your account; there's no reason to leave it on otherwise.
