Taxes

Taxes is tax return preparation: gather a client's source documents, let Bitment's AI extract and check the data, generate the return, and produce the official filed forms. It's strictly return preparation, tax planning is not part of the app, and if your firm runs CCH Axcess, Taxes can work alongside it rather than replace it.

Where to find it

Taxes lives behind the Financials tile in the dock, alongside Bookkeeping, Payroll, and Wealth. Click Financials and choose Taxes from the list that appears; the same switcher lets you jump to Bookkeeping, Payroll, or Wealth. Inside a specific client, open Taxes from that client's sub-navigation under Apps › Taxes, scoped to that client's own returns.

The app opens to one table of returns across every client, client, year, type, status, modified date, and tags, with search, filtering, sorting, and pagination. On a phone the table becomes a list of rows; search stays at the top, and year, status, and sort order live behind the Filters button.

Key concepts

Work with source documents

  1. Open a return and go to Source Documents.
  2. Upload the client's forms. On a phone or tablet, the Add menu also offers Take Photo and Photo Library, so you can snap a paper form on the spot.
  3. Extraction runs in the background, a long document doesn't block you, and you can stop a run in progress.
  4. Review each extracted report against the file shown beside it and correct anything wrong. If a scan came out wrong, use Replace on that document rather than deleting the whole thing.

On a phone you work one document at a time: tap a document, then use the Report | Source file switch to flip between the values you're editing and the scan you're checking them against.

Generate the return

Once the documents are gathered, generate the return from the Return tab. If required taxpayer information is missing (legal name, SSN or ITIN, address, filing status, dependents, date of birth, and occupation for individual returns), a dialog itemizes the gaps before letting you generate anyway. Bitment's built-in engine currently computes individual returns (Form 1040) and the common business return types (1120, 1120-S, 1065, and 990); some source document types feed the return only informationally rather than being computed, most notably lot-level trading detail.

Drilling into any generated form opens the official filled PDF, with a toggle between the client copy (TINs masked, watermarked "do not file") and the government copy. Download both as a zip of PDFs, or download the whole package for the return.

Export a Worksheet

If another application computes the return and Bitment is only used for extraction, export a Worksheet instead: one PDF aggregating every structured source document, grouped by category, with each document's fields listed exactly as extracted or hand-entered. Open it from the spreadsheet icon next to Source Documents. The dialog previews what the PDF will contain, flags anything worth reviewing first (documents still extracting, failed extractions, unreviewed documents, possible duplicates), and offers Download PDF and Save to Files; the saved copy lands in the return's client space in Files. A Worksheet needs no generated return: it works before you ever press Generate.

Status, tags, and sharing

Returns carry a status and freeform tags, which is what the table filters on. Returns are shareable like other entities in Bitment and turn up in global search. To archive, tag, or delete several returns at once on a phone, choose Select returns from the list's ⋯ menu.

Connect CCH Axcess

If your firm runs CCH Axcess, Taxes can work alongside it. This is off by default and has to be enabled for your account.

  1. Connect under Settings › Connections › CCH Axcess, a real sign-in against your firm's CCH subscription.
  2. Pull returns out of CCH: browse the returns in your CCH account and pull the ones you want in. Pulls run as background jobs with a status page; re-pulling a return overwrites it in place, with a warning first.
  3. Push to CCH, and keep source documents in sync afterward, resolving differences per field, per document, or all at once.

Inside a CCH-linked return, a Bitment | CCH tab strip switches between the two return engines over the same source documents. On a phone, the CCH browser's filters sit behind the Filters button and the pull action is a bar along the bottom; cancelling a running pull, a whole batch or a single return, is in the row's ⋯ menu on the pull-status pages.

AI in Taxes

The Assistant can read returns and source documents, and can stage changes to a return's status, tags, and fields, or generate a return, all waiting for your approval before anything changes.
