Client context and AI

Every client has a Context page: a collaborative document you write that becomes standing knowledge the AI reads whenever that client comes up in a conversation. It exists so you stop re-explaining the same account facts to the AI every time you work it, in Chat, in the Assistant, or in an agent's own reasoning.

This is separate from your personal and firm-wide AI context (set from your account dashboard), which applies to every conversation. Per-client facts belong on the client's own Context page instead, so they don't clutter every unrelated prompt.

Where to find it

Open a client, then Context in the AI group of that client's sidebar. It sits alongside that client's own Chat, Agents, and Tokens.

Key concepts

TermMeaning
Client context documentA collaborative document, one per client, that the AI injects as standing knowledge whenever the client is mentioned.
@-mentionTyping @ and a client's name in a Chat, Assistant, or agent conversation. This is what triggers the context injection.
Portal previewA live, read-only view of the client portal as a specific contact would see it, from the client's Portal page.

Write standing facts about a client

  1. Open the client and go to Context.
  2. Write what you'd otherwise re-explain every time: what the engagement is, the entity structure, the fiscal year, quirks in how this client operates, who to copy on what, how they like to be addressed.
  3. Edits save automatically. Several people can edit the same document at once, with live cursors showing who else is in it.

If the client belongs to more than one firm you operate in, a tab strip above the document lets you switch between a Personal context and each firm's own version. It only appears when there's a real choice; a single-firm client shows no selector.

How the AI uses it

Mention a client by name (typing @ and picking them from the list) in an AI Chat, Assistant, or agent conversation, and that client's Context document is injected into the conversation as background knowledge before the AI answers. The composer shows a small chip confirming that context will be included for the clients you've mentioned.

This means you can ask something like "draft a note to Northwind LLC about their extension" without restating who Northwind is or how they like to be addressed. The AI already has it, because it's on the record.

Only your most recent message is scanned for client mentions, so mention the client again if a long conversation moves on to a different account.

AI navigation and tools inside a client

Working inside a client scopes the AI the same way it scopes everything else. The client's own Chat and Agents apps (in its AI group) see and act on that client's data by default, so a question or a request made from inside the client naturally stays inside it. Any of the AI's usual tools (reading and drafting mail, managing tasks, reading files, and the rest) work the same way inside a client's Chat as they do firm-wide; they're just aimed at that client's own records once you're working from inside it.

Anything the AI changes is still staged as a proposal for your approval first, exactly as it is everywhere else. See AI Chat for how proposals, models, and tools work in general.

Preview a client's portal

The Portal page (a client-level page, not part of the AI group) lets you see exactly what a contact's client portal looks like without asking them to sign in and show you.

  1. Open the client and go to Portal.
  2. Use the Previewing as picker to choose a contact.
  3. Browse the live preview of their Files, Signatures, and Forms. It's read-only: every action in the preview is disabled, so you can look without risking a change on the client's behalf.

If the contact you're previewing has portal access turned off, the preview shows the same access-denied screen they would see.
